HAUNTED MOUNTAIN
LYRICS
-
blue moon, blue mood ring
the perfect pair of jeans, no tattoos
but she drew a face on everything
sometimes she’d draw wings on you
naked at the center of a pond
at midnight in The Bronx
screaming “Hunter boy come on
the water’s warm, be cool”
she pierced my ears in green light
with ladybugs in flight
silence spoke in white lies
broken by our rite of truth
I dreamt we woke in flames
that night she dreamt the same
the fire burned our bed
our bodies left woven and unscathed
waking slowly with the bells
our secrets told themselves
making echoes in the well
we nearly fell into
kissing only with our eyelids
butterflies entwining
laid down in a field of dead lilies
felt our lives begin again
-
before I lived here on this haunted mountain
I was walking through the valley on my own
darkness all around me, I looked to the sky and saw you
wreathed all around in a golden cloud
all of my life I’ve been a rounder
traveling across this green land
but now that I live here on this haunted mountain
I know I’m never coming down
no I’m never coming down
I’m never coming down again
every dewdrop on this haunted mountain
is like a tiny crystal ball
early in the morning, I peer into the living leaves
and prophesy with the light of dawn
all of my life I’ve been a rounder
traveling across this green land
but now that I live here on this haunted mountain
I know I’m never coming down
no I’m never coming down
I’m never coming down again
I drank the water of this haunted mountain, saw a younger reflection in the falls
the river rose around me
I was swept up in an eddy
drifted a mile and nearly drowned
all of my life I’ve been a rounder
traveling across this green land
but now that I live here on this haunted mountain
I know I’m never coming down
no I’m never coming down
I’m never coming down again

tell me baby, what was that you said?
what was that you said?
you said something about paradise
and it shot straight through me
sweet baby, lightning struck me twice
lightning struck me twice
you stopped my heart
when you said something about paradise
you can talk about it
I see it in your eyes
tell me about living in the afterlife
a home in roses made of light
I see it in your eyes
tell me how you got heaven in your eyes
heaven in your eyes
“I fell into a black hole with the hot flux of hazel”
tell me how you got heaven in your eyes
heaven in your eyes
“I nearly died when I fell into the halo”
you can talk about it
I see it in your eyes
tell me about living in the afterlife
a home in roses made of light
I see it in your eyes
you can talk about it
I see it in your eyes
tell me about living in the afterlife
a home in roses made of light
I see it in your eyes
I see it in your eyes

my dad rode a 750 when he lived alone in Siskiyou County
he’d memorized the curves of the forest route up Shasta to his home
once he flew around a bend, and elk were scattered across the road
no time to brake, so he closed his eyes and prayed
there’s too many stories to remember
too many stories to tell
too many stories
years later in Greece with my momma shining blue and gold
playing honey take the wheel on a windy Cycladean road
with a heavy rain falling, their car lost all control
and slid over the line towards a trailer truck head on
there’s too many stories to remember
too many stories to tell
too many stories
the way I remember them telling me, they slid right through the truck
not around or under, but in one side and out the other
it broke the laws of physics in my childhood memory
but they said “you made that all up”
when I retold their story recently
there’s too many stories to remember
too many stories to tell
too many stories
there’s too many stories to remember
too many stories to tell
too many stories

we climbed over the ocean
flew from stone to stone
I saw you feel without a reason
your feelings teach me that reason ain’t a need
when I try to help it hurts you
I’ll try to let you grieve
to die alone down in the stones
and come alive again in peace
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret life inside of you
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret side of you
I came home late in the evening
and from just outside the door
I heard a voice in four seasons
a woman singing I’d never heard before
you sang of yellow roses
you sang of neon glow
inventing words I’d never heard
holyahwylio
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret life inside of you
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret side
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret life inside of you
I’ll never know, I’ll never know
the secret side of you
-
I knew the moment that I saw you
that my life would never be the same
you drew a flower on my face
my heart bruised as you flew away
I didn’t know you then
though my love grew
my love knew everything
one year until we met again
by a green river where we first held hands
in midnight’s silver and white
we found the jewel of the sands
I didn’t know you then
though my love grew
my love knew everything
I didn’t know you then,
though my love grew
my love knew everything
our first kiss felt like home
with tears in our eyes
and now, one thousand kisses later
each one feels like the first time
I didn’t know you then
though my love grew
my love knew everything
I didn’t know you then,
though my love grew
my love knew everything

blue eyed boy, shining like a movie
in corduroy kissing Suzy
july five, she gave her love a locket
swallow dives and whistle rockets
ufo touched down, climb on Jim
“please don’t go” she begged
but he was gone with the wind
two full moons lighting up the evening
the undae dunes softly breathing
new friends, N’mnaven and V’rano
mind reading and spin the bottle
ufo touched down, climb on Jim
“please don’t go” she begged
but he was gone with the wind
years flew by with enigmatic beauty
but every night he’d think of Suzy
red sky filled with rockets
jim still flies with a silver locket
-
when I first met you, you we were standing on the street
revolution avenue in the dizzying heat
the sunlight framed you in a mystical beauty
your voice came ringing and it shot right through me
now I know you like I think I know myself
just a big mystery like everybody else
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from now
outside of town in a field of weeds
dirt flowers and honeybees
we laid down by the energy tree
I can say anything and you don’t judge me
cut through the tall grass by the glittering stream
what do you remember about your troubling dream?
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from now
I don’t even remember how long it’s been
it seems you’re always just around the bend
though I know when the day comes
it’ll feel the same as it always was
rolling down the boulevard like a demon on a cloud
sail in on the west wind with a dark and furrowed brow
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from now
now I know you like I think I know myself
just a big mystery like everybody else
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from
I wanna know where you’re coming from now

Ava crowed, her labor went on for days
eyes glowed, she sang lullabies to slow the pain
“sunshine my sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray”
when the midwife arrived she untied all the curtains
and unbraided the ribbons from Ava’s head
made loose every shining black strand thread by thread
come waves of redemption free out on the ocean
come waves and waves and waves and waves of grief
spread out to the horizon, shining from the land
the baby rose an angel among men
eyes gold like butterflies in the wind
“I dreamed I held you, alas I was mistaken”
grown older the angel returned to man
stock broker in a faraway and distant land
“come back and make me happy, I’ll forgive you and take the blame”
“I’ve always loved you, and nothing else could come between”
their story’s told with language below words
a love grown in silence only angels heard
“sunshine my sunshine you make me happy when skies are gray
you’ll never know dear how much I love you, you can’t take my sunshine away”
-
help me catch a bird in the meadow
we’ll hold it so gently as you write
the words I can’t to the one who has vanished or died
saving my tears in a bottle
saving my nickels and dimes
to give to the old necromancer
who knows how to read and to write
dip your quill into my well
tears fall as you write
his wings will carry my words so heavy to the sky
The storm is rolling in slowly
we’ll draw a circle on the ground
take my words, my little bird
to call upon the lover of clouds
the wind is twisting all the branches
feel the lightning in the air
shadow’s born, its faces form everywhere
fly your five directions home
fly with eyes closed
take my words, little bird
though sing the song you know
-
right from the palm of our hands we seemed to slip
to some frozen in between
stars silent show moments beyond what we know
if we believe what we’ve seen
could a lullaby rise?
could hope through the sky stream?
as the rainbow grew, could a dream come true?
when a moment of wonder fills you with wonder
a moment above and below
just a glimpse of the beauty we’re always remembering
like the rainbow knew as the dream came true
like the rainbow knew as the dream came true

LYRICS

pareidolia, with your head upon my lap on the buffalo grass
the clouds are moving fast
sippy, tell me what you see
“maybe it’s a baby
maybe it’s a cottonmouth swallowing its tail
that one looks like lady guadalupe with an airplane in her hair
it’s paradise
the sun is just a glow, though shade your eyes
there goes a phoenix with the last light”
baby, it’s an omen
let’s fly to puertecitos, where the five turns to sand
i’ve seen them burning statues of the virgin by the roadside
remember the time
you snuck in through the bathroom window
and waited for me there?
hidden in the shower for an hour
when i went to fill the tub
i found you wrapped in linens like a ghost
my heart froze, i fainted
fold me a rose
with that holiday napkin on the floor
as payment for your fortunes i predicted
you said “bite me, hell no
you’re lucky i don’t fold you boy!”
pareidolia
with your head upon my lap on the buffalo grass
the clouds are moving fast
sippy, tell me what you see
-
innocence is a light beam
you’re doing your thing
with your arm out the window
up highway nine
when it’s too much to handle, burn me a candle when you don’t have a candle
let me burn on your mind
the song of the sirens
caught up with me down wind
my nose started bleeding by the second note
heaven is a motel
with a telephone seashell
check out’s at eleven
and don’t ask for more time
did your eyes change?
i remember them blue
or were they always hazel?
still the same face, with a line or two
the same love i always knew
i try not to call, but i think i'm being followed it's been about an hour or so
i hate for you to hear me scared
otherwise i'm well
i guess you're still the first place i go
did your eyes change?
i remember them blue
or were they always hazel?
still the same face, with a line or two
the same love i always knew
-
go down to logan town, look up ruby bates
don't call the police, they won't help none
two tons of turtle doves, from out of state
just tell her i sent you, for the discount rate
my man with the moving van's looking for a job to do
he'll work for cheap, but he'll change you
blue eye on the left hand side, hazel on the right
he'll cut right through with the second sight
but i work for free
and love is all i need
yes i work for free
because love is all i need
oh no, my swimming hole is full of turpentine
it's raining mud from a bad sky
i can help to clean this up, but i don't think i'm qualified
we've got to find someone who can purify
but if you have a need of which you can't describe
a feeling of the third kind
that's my specialty, that's easy
we can draw up the plans of a new design
and i work for free
because love is all i need
yes i work for free
and love is all i need

pinwheel, it's a bad deal
falling upside down
man, may came soon
i hardly got to see you
sue, how are you?
slow dance, romance
come on joe, it's your last chance
and she won't catch you, man i’d bet you she won't catch you when you fall
two saviors fighting over a soul
a black eye leaves a black hole
it seems the glass has cracked it's getting cold
"hold me, hold me joe"
new light, we had true sight
falling inward out
won't you recall, bonsai's on the dashboard?
a warm refuge from a cold storm
five eyes, those were bright nights
even orion's got a soft side
but he won't catch you, suzy i'd bet you
he won't catch you when you fall
two saviors fighting over a soul
a black eye leaves a black hole
it seems the glass has cracked, it's getting cold
hold me, hold me
"no, i need to be alone
to know my home
i know no home
but hold me, hold me joe"
-
eyes behind eyes behind her eyes
i know them from before
maybe night skies golden
maybe desert doors
two moons rose today
and we slept until eight in the morning
mind behind mind behind my mind one seed in the soil
maybe white apples glowing
maybe apple cores
two moons, full i'd say
at least full enough for saying time behind
time behind our time i've held her before
maybe wildfires moaning
maybe summer storms
two moons show the way
through the wood early morning
-
our dream daughter
candle on the altar
blue eye on the left
your mother’s brown on the right
you grew taller, taller than i am
in white light from her breast
i touched your hand
who are you?
who would you have been?
blue jay stuck in my kitchen
just cold water
the shadows getting longer
though bright nights hold my breath
for silver on the rise
i took all the blankets
and slept out in the yard
moon fall, i swear i saw gold behind the stars
who are you?
who would you have been? blue jay stuck in my kitchen
fly away
-
save me half of that sandwich annie
i haven't eaten since 1999
it's a miracle i'm alive
please spare my life with ham on white tonight
maybe you could let go of those potato chips you're hiding in your drawer what are you hiding for?
i’d do anything
actually anything
i'd do anything, to the letter anything
i'd do anything, anything
i'd do anything
faithfully, anything
-
fireflies to show me around
every hole in new york town
my eyes are getting old
but i don’t mind the blue and gold
the blue and gold
up at hadley’s five and dime
ten years of killing time with sam and outside joe
black jack and egyptian rat
kick-the-can and the biscuit dance
our eyes are getting old
but we don’t mind the blue and gold
the blue and gold
“race you down to the well” said sue
“last one surrenders their family jewels,
you’re quick, but hunter i am too”
all the ways that she laughed
made me want to make her laugh
knock knock, no one’s home
i saw the dog of a drifter, out on the sidewalk yesterday
she said “hey sure i’m grateful, but how long do you think this walk will go?”
i don’t know
oh my jokes are getting old
“race you down to the well” said sue
“last one surrenders their family jewels,
you’re quick, but hunter i am too”

sparrows fight with a hawk in flight
the dippers fade away
slowly, sable turns to white
she left her sleeping bag behind
left her pocket knife
a watermelon and a lime
found a paper in my coat
forgotten months ago
she stole my lighter so i'll use the stove
saw a murder of crows move by purple with the night
while starlings murmured to silent types
maybe august 29th
if i make it through july
thank god for coffee and apple pie
-
the halo light was humble
our heather died
but tomorrow i’ll buy roses
nine hands high, little forest
jenny, why did you tell the horses?
willow walls entwine you
your mother called
we spoke for seven hours
i found the hole you climbed through
but it’s too small to follow with the flowers
though all our love remains
so why do we feel sorrow?
pain came in seasons departed
our bodies left alone
all our love will stay
to live again tomorrow
woke at dawn, reminded of secret songs
by the warbler and the robin
i swear i heard you humming
in broken tongues through the curtain
faces form on our ceiling
a summer storm’s little arrows cross my chest
the sparrows mourn your leaving
with silent rises in their breasts
though all our love remains
so why do we feel sorrow?
pain came in seasons departed
our bodies left alone
all our love will stay
to live again tomorrow

In a tailspin, with the mistress of the black top
"Drew, who'd you fool to borrow this race car?
I can't get it to start again, there's a pigeon in the fan, would you lend me a hand?
Let's push it up to the Shamrock and have Joe take a look.
they call him Joe By The Book, and I trust him
He fixed my grandma's Cadillac
She threw two rods, he didn't even charge her for the block,
He’d accidentally ordered two back in ninety-five
“Ain’t much to modify the engine mounts and manifold, got the parts in the yard”
even lent her a car
“would you yank the wheel real hard?
Damnit Drew, you should get paid to waste my time
You’re the professor of nickels and dimes
I’ll see you tomorrow, say hey to the girls,
Would you bring me that shirt I lent you?
-
"Meet me down by the pool, sweet Suzy"
"Summers gone."
"I know! But the wind is warm"
PARADISE, exclaimed my koozie to her swallow dive in perfect form.
I knew, I knew it'd kill me
but sue, I didn't think it'd hurt so bad
You flew the coop and left me talking to my hands
Elmo's Fuel, up on FM20, "I bet my 84 could beat your 2010.
"Stud horse draw, let's flip a penny Hunter,
heads you lose, and tails I win"
I knew, i knew it'd kill me
but sue, I didn't think it'd hurt so bad
You flew the coop and left me talking to my hands
Cross my heart and hope to gravy, baby,
loving you is a funeral band
-
Ninety miles an hour through an electric storm,
Just another town or two until New Mexico
Can you feel it? I can feel it too
Why's my Coca Cola taste like gasoline?
I see you're fighting back a grin
I can't believe it, I can't believe you'd do that to me Ruby
"I bet you ten dollars I can guess your name-
Suzy Burlingame? Judy Gables? or is it Maybelle?
no I'm sure it's Eleanor
Maybe Sable? I've never met a Sable,
but I'm sure it's Eleanor"
Why's the porch light on? I thought you flipped the breaker,
and who's that moving around inside?
Oh Ruby I'm too young to die,
Would you go in with me? I want you by my side
"I bet you ten dollars I can guess your name-
Suzy Burlingame? Judy Gables? or is it Maybelle?
no I'm sure it's Eleanor
Maybe Sable? I've never met a Sable,
but I'm sure it's Eleanor"

Extra socks and underwear, ten pairs
Two alarm clocks, set to 5:00 and 5:05
If I could find a way back home, I’d go
Morning Suzie, morning Kate, how’s Hank?
Seat back tables locked upright, it’s a full flight
If I could find a way back home, I’d go
-
Exit 7 roses and a gallon of wine
Fancy caesar salad dressing, won’t you be my valen-
“Time to go, the bar is closing Joe, come on I’ll give you a ride back..”
Home is where the heart aches,
my home is where the milk shakes hands with the bourbon
there’s ghost’s in the curtains
it’s hard to know what time the roast went in,
cause I locked myself outside again
-
“Maybe someday soon..” Maybelle cried to her costume jewels
“I’ll be high and wide, flying away on 99, flying ninety-nine
Carolina born, bred by hounds with demon horns
For now she’ll pass the day, fooling around in Woodrow’s hay, fooling in the hay
“You ain’t worth a dime, my dear, my only child
you’re everything I wish I could be”
“Maybe some day soon,
China Grove or Saskatoon,
Any old town will do”
“You ain’t worth a dime, my dear, my only child
you’re everything I wish I could be”
-
Black smoke hands divide heart from hollow
The white behind the white swallows
He had hills inside, iris and holly
All of twenty skies, Johnny
Johnny Robinson, King of the K-town crawl
Jumped the front street bridge with a broken paw
Momma’s only boy, his father’s seventh son
Swan dive to a cannonball!
-
Miss Eliza Dumont’s hand, the hummingbird, opened a stubborn soda can for Jane
Locust trees and honeybee’s, lilting in the wind
“Father, hallowed be thy name”
Boxing match with a pinion shaft, Sunday punch one-two
Ain’t coming back for the chicken scratch he made to pull us out this town
This town
“Dining room table, where we conceived our child
born there was she, and sisters three
please, let us sit a while”
Maybe’s up on hollow hill, begging god for gold
Jude’s downtown, begging men
They say love can’t be bought or sold
But this week, it’s two for ten
Sue, you always were the peaceful one
But a gunfight inside you is ripping up the stone
“Dining room table, where we conceived our child
born there was she, and sisters three
please, let us sit a while”
-
Tail wagging for the fat and burnt ends
Why Sam?
What happened? You back stabbing two timing snake eyed con-man?
You said you were my best friend
Last laughing with a strong tail wind
Five miles gone before you noticed
Roll in the blood of a turtle dove, make my home in the snow drifts
You said you were my best friend
Two years time, the ink runs on the missing signs
Throw my bone in the garbage
I'll be chasing the sun, the moon better run, and pay no mind to the harvest
You said you were my best friend
-
You can’t fool me with your blue eyes, you can’t fool me your eloquent locution
You can’t fool with your fame, society or flaming allusions
You can’t fool me with the secrets advertised with every other glass of wine
But you can fool me with your tears
You fool me with your tears every time
Every time, every time and time again, I’m the loser
You take me right back where I began
I know you aim to use me, please excuse me but I know you do
I’m here to tell you, all the schemes and flipsy parlor tricks ain’t getting through
You can’t use the sunlight of your eyes to soften words of ice
But you can use me with your tears; you use me with your tears every time
Every time, every time and time again, I’m the loser
You take me right back where I began
More wine, more wine to fool the moon into rising
You can fool me with your tears
You can fool me with your tears anytime
